Song Brocade

Acclaimed as the "crown of Chinese brocades," Song brocade originated in Suzhou during the Song Dynasty and stands as one of China's three major brocade traditions. Woven using a complex "three-end twill" structure, it features exquisite designs that blend geometric patterns with various auspicious motifs, resulting in a finished product that combines structural precision with aesthetic elegance. Historically, it was frequently used for imperial attire and the mounting of fine calligraphy and paintings. Valued for its understated elegance, Song brocade was included in the first batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006, and in 2009, it was incorporated into the "Chinese traditional sericulture and silk craftsmanship" entry on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—developments that have revitalized this thousand-year-old craft.
